X-rays play an important role in revealing an artist’s techniques, pigments, and underpaintings. X-ray film primarily records the structural elements of a painting. An x-ray can also easily spot repaired tears on the canvas, holes in the panel support, losses in the ground layers, and cut down edges and transfers. An x-ray can also reveal a painting hidden underneath the visible painting.
